How to Get an Interlock and Interlock Driver’s license

Interlock License Overview

In New Mexico, individuals convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) are legally required to obtain an ignition interlock license and install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle. This requirement applies even to first-time DWI offenders.

If the individual is applying for their first driver’s license in New Mexico and is between 18 and 24 years old, they need to bring a Certificate of Completion for the “None for the Road” DWI Awareness Class. The time when they complete this class does not matter; what is important is that they have the certificate with them. They can find information about “None for the Road” at MVD field offices.

If the individual is 25 years old or older and has ever been convicted of DWI, they must also show proof of having completed a DWI prevention and education program. This can be the “None for the Road” class or a similar program from another state. It is essential to remember that there is no time limit on when they must have completed this program; it simply requires proof that they have participated in it at any point in the past

Eight manufacturers currently distribute ignition interlock devices across the state, providing services to 84 cities and towns. The Traffic Safety Division (TSD) administers a legislatively mandated Ignition Interlock Indigent Fund, which offers financial assistance to eligible indigent offenders who need to install an interlock device.

Fees for the Ignition Interlock Indigent Fund are collected from individuals convicted of DWI and charged annually as long as the device is installed. These funds are specifically designated to help indigent offenders with the costs associated with installing, leasing, and removing the interlock device.

If you are required to install an interlock device, it is essential to choose a company that is approved for this purpose. You can find a list of approved providers by visiting the DOT.nm.gov website. Navigate to the Ignition Interlock program, where you will find links to both Service Centers and Mobile Service Centers, along with relevant regulations.
